The San Antonio Riverwalk is one of those must see places when visiting Texas, that’s if you chose not stay at the Riverwalk. The San Antonio Riverwalk is located in downtown San Antonio and its filled with beautiful hotels, restaurants, bars and shops that are right on the river. Although I didn’t stay in downtown, I did get to spend one evening and learned seven things along the way. So here are seven “tips” or things you must know for your next trip to the San Antonio Riverwalk.

Six things I learned about the San Antonio River walk

  1. Endless Restaurant and bar options!

My visit to San Antonio was a a quick one and my purpuse was to visit family, not San Antonio. However, we managed to go one day and explore the Riverwalk. I didn’t have time to research restaurants or places to visit and realized how many options there are available. You can also pick any restaurant on the Riverwalk and have it on the river cruise. Make a reservation at all restaurant to avoid the long waits on the weekends!

2. Purchase your Riverwalk boat tour tickets ahead of time online!

If you want to ride the Riverwalk boat tour, make sure you purchase your tickets ahead of time online!. The wait was an hour just to purchase the ticket.  So purchase your tickets ahead of time! You can also have dinner on the river cruise where you can enjoy food and drinks from your favorite River Walk restaurant. More information on Go Rio Cruises.

3. Don’t go on the holiday weekend

Enough said because we learned this the hard way. We visited the Riverwalk on the fourth of July weekend and we had little kids with us. It was over crowded and hot. Better to visit this place not on a holiday weekend.

4. Best time of the day to visit the Riverwalk

Best time of the day to visit the Riverwalk if you day visiting is around 5 or 6 o’clock.During the summer, it gets dark around 9pm so get there when it cools down and you can enjoy dinner either during the day or in the evening.

5. Texas is Hot!!!!!

I quickly learned that Texas is hot! In case it’s gets resally hot while walking the Riverwalk, make sure to get some ice cream. There’s a cute little ice cream shop located on top of the Republic of Texas Cafe. When you see the Texas flag umbrellas, go upstairs for ice cream magic!

6. The Alamo is Really Small

One of the coolest things I found out was that The Alamo is located in downtown San Antonio at the Riverwalk. I also found out that its not as big as it looks! You can visit the Alamo and the Riverwalk on the same day.

7. Texas Wine Country is 70 Miles Away from San Antonio Texas

On your next trip to San Antonio Texas, is that Fredericksburg is about 70 miles away. Fredericksburg is Texas Wine Country and it’s a must visit. Texas Wines are up an coming with some great producers on the forefront. While I didn’t get to visit Texas Wine Country on this trip, I did get to try some great Texas wines at the Vino Volo at the San Antonio Airport. I tried a Sangiovese by The Source, a wine cooperative and a Red Blend from Kuhlman Cellars.
